ETIOLOGY AND PATHOGENESIS A callus is a defined area of hyperkeratosis, which is sometimes lichenified and typically occurs over bony pressure points. The hyperkeratosis and thickening of the skin are due to irritation resulting from frictional contact with a hard surface on the exterior of the skin and pressure from an underlying bony prominence.
