ABSTRACT

Introduction Chapter 6 dealt with vegetative propagation and the use of plant cuttings in horticulture and conservation. This chapter considers regeneration from explants (small cuttings) of leaves and other plant organs cultured in vitro but under non-sterile conditions. This simple procedure shows some affinities to the sterile micropropagation techniques discussed in Chapters 8-12. However, it differs in the absence of sucrose or other organic nutrients in the medium and its lack of sterility. Furthermore, the rapidity and simplicity of the non-sterile technique is in great contrast to the painstaking and relatively slow procedures adopted when explants are cultured in the complex media normally employed under sterile conditions.
