ABSTRACT
The prognosis is guarded. Recurrence rates for spontaneous pneumothorax in dogs treated by thoracocentesis or tube thoracostomy is 80% or higher, and with surgery recurrence approaches 25% as other areas of lung can develop bullae which subsequently rupture. Adjunct procedures such as mechanical or chemical pleurodesis may further increase the effectiveness of surgical management.
