ABSTRACT
Intracapsular. The capsule is opened and the thyroid gland is separated and removed from within. The cranial parathyroid gland and its blood supply are preserved. The capsule left behind may contain residual thyroid tissue, and an 8% recurrence rate of hyperthyroidism is reported. Hypocalcemia occurs in 15-22% of patients.
