ABSTRACT

Povidone slowly releases free iodine which binds to bacterial cell walls creating free radicals that result in cell death. Advantages include rapid onset of action (similar to chlorhexidine) and broad spectrum of activity (most bacteria, any viruses, fungi, some protozoa, and sporicidal after prolonged exposure). Disadvantages include inactivation in the presence of organic matter, minimal residual activity, skin irritation and staining.
