ABSTRACT
When a load is applied to cartilage, the increase in pressure squeezes water out of the proteoglycan molecules (60c). As water is squeezed out of the cartilage matrix, the cartilage becomes less compliant. Movement of water requires time, thus the response of the cartilage to the load requires time.
