ABSTRACT

Assaults or child abuse account for only a smallproportion (1%) of eye injuries4,5. Most eye injuries are not intentionally inflicted, but occur during activities which, while not maltreatment in themselves, may involve some degree of improper supervision or ineffective or improperly used protective gear. Sports injuries are common, especially with baseball, basketball, tennis, and hockey6. Of severe sports-related eye injuries, 5% occurred with safety or prescription eyewear7. Fireworks, bungee cords, fishhooks, needles, knives, pencils (325), and pens have all been reported. Motor vehicle airbag accidents damage the cornea with significant endothelial cell loss8. Firearm-related eye injuries have decreased over the last 10 years, but pediatric homicide has increased9.
