ABSTRACT

DEFINITION AND CLINICAL FEATURES A brown or purple-brown discolouration from the accumulation of haem, iron, and melanin pigments in the dermis, with or without increased melanin in the epidermis. Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation occurs after trauma, thermal injury, or inflammatory dermatoses such as atopic eczema, lichen planus, acne, and SLE. The discolouration intensifies and persists after the primary lesions have resolved (202, 203). It is particularly likely to occur in dark-skinned individuals.
