Infection of the beard, tinea barbae, causes similar problems to tinea capitis, but, as the infecting agent is often an animal dermatophyte, inflammatory reactions can be marked (448).

Tinea manuum, affecting the hands, is usually caused by T. rubrum and causes particular diagnostic difficulties. Inflammation is often minimal. The palm becomes dry with mild scaling which is most obvious in the palmar creases (449). Infec-
