ABSTRACT

The number of pests reported on crops is increasing throughout the world; this may be due to changes in environmental conditions, different cropping patterns, plant movement, or a combination of several factors. In many instances the natural enemies of these pests lag behind. Frequently, where a suitable biological control agent is known, governmental regulations can severely restrict its use. Beneficial organisms are now being released under license schemes whereby the user must hold a copy and abide by its strict wording. Licenses are issued by the country or state wishing to introduce a nonindigenous biocontrol agent, usually following risk assessments to evaluate its potential environmental impact.
