DEFINITION AND CLINICAL FEATURES Zinc deficiency is rare in the Western world and is caused by insufficient dietary intake or abnormally increased consumption of the mineral. Elderly patients are at increase risk for zinc deficiency due to potential underlying causes of malnutrition.
