ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION The widespread interest in nutraceuticals began in 1997 with publication of the book entitled, ‘The Arthritis Cure’, by Dr. Jason Theodosakis1. Three years later, USA sales of nutraceuticals topped $640 million2. The world market for pet nutraceuticals was worth $960 million in 2004; about 60% of this was for dogs, 25% for cats, and 10% for horses3. Joint health products for pets accounted for nearly half of the market, followed by vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants.
