ABSTRACT

A facial palsy can have a devastating effect on a patient. It is associated with a number of potential problems that need to be addressed on an individual basis:

1. Visual defects from corneal exposure or its medical and surgical management

2. Ocular pain or discomfort 3. Chronic lacrimation and epiphora from corneal

exposure, paralytic ectropion, and lacrimal pump failure

4. Cosmetic disfi gurement 5. Diffi culties with speech/drooling

These problems can affect a patient’s ability to work, drive, and to interact socially. Patients may lose self-esteem and become discouraged and depressed.
