ABSTRACT
Traditionally, formulators have tended to use statistical techniques such as a response surface methodology to investigate the design space, but modeling and optimization by this method can be misleading especially if the formulation is complex. This entry discusses some of the mathematical concepts involved with genetic programming and genetic algorithms, and reviews applications of both.
