PHARMACOKINETIC CONSIDERATIONS IN THE ELDERLY Absorption Age-related physiologic changes that may affect absorption include reduced gastric secretion of acid, decreased gastric emptying rate, reduced splanchnic blood flow, and decreased mucosal absorptive surface area (Table 3.1). Despite these physiologic changes, the oral absorption of cardiovascular drugs is not significantly affected by aging, probably because most drugs are absorbed passively (1).
