ABSTRACT

In 1970, Folkman first hypothesized that angiogenesis was essential for tumor growth, proliferation, and development, and could as such represent a promising target for anticancer therapies. This followed the observation that tumors require oxygen and nutrients to be able to grow beyond 1-2 mm3, which is achieved through the formation of dedicated neo-vessels, a process known as “angiogenic switch.”1-3
