ABSTRACT
Since different portions of the nail matrix give rise to corresponding specifi c territories in the nail plate, it is possible to identify which portion of the matrix is involved by determining the level of the pigment revealed in transverse histological sections of the free edge with Fontana-Masson silver stain or using dermoscopy.
