ABSTRACT

The 19th century view72 was that service and residence abroad by diplomats, employees and service personnel would not normally give rise to a change of domicile because the residence was linked to duties that were intended only to endure for a limited period of time. The recent view, however, is that it is a question of nature and decree and that a soldier on active service abroad may acquire a new domicile if there is evidence that he intends to settle there once he becomes free from his obligation to reside there.73
