ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we examine the sentences of imprisonment (immediate and suspended) which may be imposed on an adult offender. Custodial sentences for young offenders are considered in Chapter 16. However, we begin by considering the statutory criteria which govern the imposition of custodial sentences; these statutory criteria apply to all custodial sentences and so are equally applicable to the sentences discussed in Chapter 16.
