ABSTRACT

Cases that come before the courts may be divided into two broad categories: civil cases and criminal cases. In civil cases, the initiating party seeks relief against the other party or parties. The remedy claimed is personal to the parties, and is usually expressed in monetary terms. Criminal cases are typically initiated by the State, and result in deprivation of liberty or deprivation of property in favour of the State.1
