ABSTRACT
Central to modernity is the use of reason and the desire to assert control over the process and forms of the world. If we are to become the masters and possessors of the earth, as the French philosopher Descartes had earlier claimed, then subjecting the processes of the world to rational (scientific) investigation and employing reason to organise ourselves, and our institutions, appears to be the enlightened mode of operation.
