ABSTRACT

Listed buildings26 are of special architectural or historic interest. Most buildings built before 1840 are listed; after 1840, a selection is made; and buildings less than 30 years old are listed if they are of outstanding quality and are under threat. Listed building consent may be required even if planning permission is not. It is an offence to carry out works requiring consent without obtaining consent first; or to fail to comply with a condition in a consent. The local authority also has the power to serve a Listed Building Enforcement Notice.27
