ABSTRACT
The recycling and re-use of packaging has been provided for under the European Parliament and Council Directive 94/62/EC of 20 December 1994 on Packaging and Packaging Waste.44 The introduction of the Directive45 must be set against the background of the European waste strategy of prevention, increased recovery, safe disposal and the best environmental option, including economic considerations. Other considerations are included in the EU Waste Strategy Document (Com 96/399), which promotes the use of clean technologies, consumer information, Eco labelling, Eco audits and life cycle analysis.
