ABSTRACT

The objective of containment is to prevent contact between the contaminated materials and potential targets by isolating, covering or encapsulating the contaminated material. It can also be used to control contaminant movement and prevent outside agents from affecting the contaminated material. Containment techniques include the installation of vertical barriers in the ground and the installation of horizontal barriers below contaminated material. These techniques use conventional civil engineering plant and equipment. Engineered cover systems incorporating layers of natural clay soil and synthetic material can be used to prevent the upward migration of contaminants and to reduce the infiltration of water from above.
