ABSTRACT

Civil law is concerned with the rights and duties of citizens towards each other and focuses on disputes that centre on: • law of contract; • law of succession; • law of tort; • family law. • law of property; These laws would cover disputes that could include issues like: Contract Promises. When is a promise legally enforceable and what might

be the consequences of the promise? Tort Nuisance, negligence, defamation and trespass. (A tort is a private

or civil wrong for which damages can be claimed.) Property Rights of ownership of land or issues concerning a lease. Succession The passing on of property after the death of its former owner. Family The rights, duties and status of all members of the household:

wife, husband, child, parent, etc. In civil law, individual citizens who wish to establish their rights initiate legal actions. For those citizens who lose a civil action, examples of what they can be required to do could include the paying of damages or giving another citizen the rights to custody of a child.
