ABSTRACT

When considering the issue of political participation, a number of key issues are central to the study of citizenship. Who are the citizens that are most likely to engage in some form of political activity? Why do some choose to become actively involved in a political process whilst others choose not to take any interest or any part? What influences a citizen when choosing whether or not to vote? For those citizens who do vote, why do they vote for that specific candidate or party? Is the degree to which a citizen participates in any political process linked to the citizen’s social class, age, ethnicity, sex, religion or even their geographical region? These are all key questions in any discussion of citizenship and political participation.
