ABSTRACT

Some of the key elements of a representative democracy have by now been discussed. However, a representative democracy will only be successful if citizens are prepared to participate. It is essential in a representative democracy to have some citizens who are prepared to represent other citizens. A representative democracy needs citizens who are not only prepared to represent other citizens, but who will also be prepared to openly state and communicate their ideas, attitudes and aspirations to all other citizens in order for those citizens to be able to make an informed choice in a free and fair election.
