ABSTRACT

At some point in a discussion about politics, you will probably hear the comment that ‘all the political parties are the same’. It is important for the student of citizenship to realise that all political parties are not the same. To illustrate this, some citizens believe that all large supermarkets are the same. They all have silver chariots and sell the same or the same types of goods. The layout of the stores is remarkably similar, with the fresh produce at the entrance and the ‘daily loaf’ requiring a complete circumnavigation of the aisles, thus simultaneously giving the impression of freshness and offering the opportunity to acquire other purchases through temptation or memory. The subtext of the messages is the same, ‘high quality’ with ‘low price’, with even the checkouts looking the same. Undoubtedly there are similarities in style, image and organisation.
