ABSTRACT

Although some students of Citizenship would look at the television and be able to cite examples that may initially question the validity of the term ‘gender apartheid’, there are many issues to consider. Remaining with television, with developments in digitisation, cable networks and the continuation of satellite broadcasting, there is now a far greater range of channels available to citizens. One type of channel that is now available is a ‘gold’ channel. This is a channel, like UK Gold, that is dedicated to the broadcasting of a back catalogue, the polite term for ‘old programmes’. Old programmes reflect old cultural norms, that is, the cultural norms and values of their day, so, although there has been some progress, many citizens who watch these programmes could be living in a media time warp and, by implication, a cultural time warp. It also has to be remembered that television is only one part of the media.
