ABSTRACT

No matter what else is happening, everybody, every day, has the potential not only to ‘think citizenship’, but also to be actively involved with citizenship issues. In reality this should not be new advice, as throughout your citizenship course there are plenty of opportunities to be active. Being active has the advantage of bringing the course alive and a lot of skills can be acquired from being active. It is much more enjoyable seeing a court in action than reading the transcript of the trial, and getting involved with political processes and the community will be more rewarding than just reading about pressure groups. Being active can also mean developing an awareness of what is going on around you, from the smallest element of your local community to the activities of multi-national organisations.
