Re O (A Minor) (Medical Treatment) (1993) A child, born prematurely, suffered from respiratory distress syndrome. The doctor attending her considered that a blood transfusion might be necessary. The parents, because of religious beliefs, refused to give their consent. An emergency protection order was made by the court. It was a matter of urgency to establish whether the court should act so as to override the declared objections of the parents, and what legal steps were needed to allow the court to make its decision.
