ABSTRACT
During the early 1970s the Australian government officially abandoned its assimilation policy towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. There was talk of the need to protect the distinctive cultural heritage and identity of these peoples, and to promote their ability to influence their own destinies – what the government now refers to as ‘self-determination’.2
