ABSTRACT

The amount of claim improvement in P&I insurance is almost equal to the amount in hull insurance. The only difference is that in P&I insurance an improvement emerged immediately from 1995-96 to 1996-97, while in hull insurance there was no improvement until 1997-98. According to Hernqvist, this could be explained by the start made to develop procedures and checklists by the Club. The focus, initially, was on hazards that produced the most frequent types of claims and are thus closer to both the people on board and those ashore. Hazards producing injuries and cargo operation hazards are good examples; both are common types of P&I claims. He also added that this was speculation and they did not have real proof that this had been the case. Nevertheless, he concluded that this assumption had the force of logic.
