ABSTRACT
Competition law in the UK is essentially statute based. The most notable feature of the common law’s development for these purposes was its abstinence from competition issues. This may reflect the adoption of the philosophy of Adam Smith, the famous Scottish economist, an advocate of the free market and laissezfaire in the early 19th century. The common law has attempted to develop methods of dealing with competition problems in three areas.
