ABSTRACT

The brain sits within the bony cavity of the skull, the so-called intra-cranial cavity, and rests on its floor or base, its sides and upper part being surrounded by the vault of the skull. The vault is made up of six large, gently curved bones which meet and fuse at what are known as suture lines. These bones are: (a) the frontal (forehead); (b) the occipital (back of the head); (c) the temporal (temples); and (d) the parietal (sides and top of the head).
