ABSTRACT

One of the central forms of participation in contemporary British society is involvement in charity, either through charitable donation or voluntary action. This involvement can serve both symbolic and practical ends. In this paper, I will try to disentangle some of the different functions the concept of charity currently performs and relate their development to the broader debate about the future of civil society in this and other Western societies.
