ABSTRACT
Since 1994, some legal aid services have been provided under contracts, known as franchises, between the LAB and various providers, from either the private or voluntary sectors. Under this franchising, the LAB has devolved its powers to solicitors, law centres and other advice agencies. Franchising has become widespread, particularly in personal injury, family matters and welfare benefits.
