ABSTRACT
Chronic gingivitis eventually leads to chronic periodontitis and the destruction of the supporting tissues, ie the periodontal ligament and the alveolar bone. Progress is usually painless over many years and may only become noticeable when the patient becomes aware of increased looseness of the teeth, drifting, or the advent of an acute periodontal abscess.
