ABSTRACT

The incidence of bacterial meningitis is reducing rapidly now. There are three main organisms: Neisseria meningitidis (Meningococcus), Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

There will be a significant reduction in the amount of meningococcal meningitis now that the Meningococcus vaccine is being universally administered. However, there are three strains of Meningococcus: A, B and C. Although C is the commonest, and that is the one against which the vaccine is active, it is still possible to have meningococcal disease from A and B.
