ABSTRACT

Sudden unexpected death can occur at any age. Indeed, a sudden unexpected death from heart attack is one of the commonest forms of death in middleaged men. However, the U in SUDS should stand not only for unexpected, but also for unexplained. Thus, infants, children and adults who suffer from SUDS have no cause for their sudden demise found at post mortem. SUDS can therefore be used as a sort of generic term, and has in some areas taken over from age-related acronyms such as SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and SADS (sudden adult or adolescent death syndrome).
