ABSTRACT

Unexplained concerning events should be investigated appropriately. The child may come in with a history of a fit, a history of going apnoeic (stopping breathing), or choking. A careful history should be taken, which should include whether these events have occurred previously, and a decision made as to whether the child should be admitted for observation and investigation. Unfortunately now, admitting paediatricians should be very suspicious of non-accidental injury in all infants and children who have unexplained ‘funny turns’. It is better to err on the side of caution and to acquire social work advice unnecessarily in innocent cases, rather than miss potentially life

threatening adult-perpetrated events. Observation in hospital of the parent/ child interaction may be helpful. Covert surveillance may be revealing.
