ABSTRACT
As with CSOs, since 2 December 2002, the relevant chief officers can now also commence the recruitment, training and deployment of other designated civilians. It should be noted that with regard to CSOs, both the government and the police service have emphasised that these are an additional resource and are therefore not a substitute for police officers. This assertion is supported by the fact that additional funding has been provided by the government for this purpose.
