ABSTRACT
This area is often referred to as parliamentary privilege, since it involves the independence of Parliament and its members from external control, something which Parliament has jealously guarded since the 17th century. This doctrine has a number of consequences, not least in defining the limits of parliamentary privilege, since the courts have shrunk from adjudicating in areas where Parliament has claimed exclusive jurisdiction.
