ABSTRACT

The only part of your paper that will actually be seen by admissions tutors is the essay, and it goes without saying that it is essential to produce the kind of answer that will leave tutors with a favourable first impression of you as a candidate. An ability to produce high quality written English is essential both to academic success and, subsequently, to success in many professions, and is a skill that is highly prized amongst lawyers. It is, however, something that is commonly taken for granted, with many people incorrectly assuming that the skills needed to write well are somehow inbuilt and not capable of being developed. Most students, when asked what their greatest failing is in respect of essay writing, tend to answer that they should have done more revision of the required factual knowledge. Whilst this is often true, it is far more common to come across students who have sufficient knowledge to answer a question, but are let down by the way in which they approach the writing itself.
