ABSTRACT

While chapters 6–7 addressed primary and situational crime prevention, the emphasis here is upon tertiary prevention and the possible use of social crime prevention strategies. However, before offenders can be sentenced, they must be caught, and all the evidence – from Britain and abroad – suggests that detection rates for burglary are particularly low. The chapter consequently begins with a discussion of the reasons for this, followed by consideration of innovative strategies that have been introduced in recent years. Policies aimed at limiting the distribution of stolen goods are then reviewed.
