ABSTRACT

In contrast to the considerable amount of research carried out on victims of burglary, relatively little research has focused on offenders. This is partly because, with a low detection rate (see Chapter 11), known burglars are unrepresentative of burglars in general. It is also because traditionally etiological research has considered offenders in general, rather than those committing a specific offence, a strategy that seems partly justified by evidence that most burglars either commit or have in the past committed a wide range of offence types.
