ABSTRACT

In most countries there are two tiers of government: central and local. In some federal jurisdictions such as the USA, however, these governmental divisions are divided even further into central (federal), local (state) and sublocal (cities, counties, etc.) levels of government. Policing organisations often mirror these governmental structures. This chapter, therefore, considers some of the many public bodies in the UK that are engaged in a range of specialised policing and that are situated in either the central or local levels of government. The chapter also illustrates the fragmented nature of this form of policing in the UK, involving as it does dozens of different policing bodies. Finally, while all these policing bodies are clearly located in the public sector, the chapter demonstrates how they vary in their degrees of ‘publicness’.
