ABSTRACT

There are number of organisations engaged in policing that display the characteristics of ‘privateness’, but which, for various reasons, cannot be classified as private security organisations. These bodies are often ignored when the spectrum of organisations involved in policing is explored (the classification of policing developed by Jones and Newburn (1998) for example, did not include this category). Some of these organisations, however, have high public profiles and engage in important functions. This chapter, therefore, considers these bodies along similar lines to those used in previous chapters.
