ABSTRACT
Amongst the many duties that police officers will be called upon to perform, dealing with individuals who are behaving in violent or aggressive ways may be at the forefront of many people’s image of the police. Dealing with violent youths who have been on a drinking binge, calming the irate man who seems intent on harming his partner, controlling a group of football hooligans, are all incidents with which we expect police officers to deal. Police officers may have their own views as to why people become violent and aggressive, and have their own ways of dealing with those who exhibit these tendencies.
