ABSTRACT
The first part of this book discussed the social construction of childhood and adolescence as particular categories of human development and the various methods utilised and developed over time for the socialisation and disciplining of young people as a group functional to the requirements of industrial modernity. The final two chapters discussed the development of increasingly sophisticated attempts to respond and intervene in the lives of children and young people who had deviated from defined acceptable norms of behaviour.
